POSITION TITLE:       Estimator

 

REPORTS TO:            Division Manager & Chief Estimator

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  1. Estimators are responsible for evaluating bid specifications and drawings, ensuring that everything required to successfully bid the project is understood and evaluated.
  2. Estimators must follow-up with subcontractors and vendors to ensure that the required quotes are received.
  3. Estimators must also to follow-up the Owner on bids and budgets.
  4. Administration of Bid;
    1. Solicits and maintains communication with subcontractors and vendors.
    2. Prepares subcontract bid packages.
    3. Transmits addenda and other bid information to subcontractors.
    4. Ensures proper coverage from subcontractors on bid day.
    5. Shows creativity and resourcefulness to gain better pricing from subs or vendors.
    6. Completes 100% of bids and budgets by the bid deadline.
    7. Enters all relative information into B2W estimating software.
    8. Documents and shares all pertinent information with estimating team.
  5. Project Knowledge;
    1. Review bid requirements thoroughly and asks follow-up questions on every bid.
    2. Has a thorough understanding of the scope for specific trades assigned.
    3. Develop RFI’s and clarifications to ensure adequate subcontractor coverage.
    4. Performs a comprehensive “bid day” analysis/scoping of specific assigned trades.
    5. Understands how to fit subs to the size/scope of project.
    6. Minimize exclusions by anticipating unique needs; that is, – “doing your homework”
  6. Follow Up and Closing;
    1. Consistently follows-up on submitted bids with bidding party.
    2. Knows and develops professional relationships with engineers, architects, construction managers, property managers, brokers and others to enrich bidding rapport.
  7. Project Turnover;
    1. Properly turns over bid documents and sub buyout information to Project Management team in a timely manner.
    2. Review drawings with Project Management team and highlight areas of concern.
    3. Review job cost and sub suppliers’ pricing with Project Management team.
    4. Ensure compliance with bid as presented.

 

 

  1. General Requirements;
    1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    2. Must know Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Project.
    3. Familiar with bidding software, Preferably B2W (Bid 2 Win)
    4. High level of negotiation and marketing skills.
    5. High level financial planning and budgeting skills.
    6. High level strategy, analytical and planning skills.
    7. Knowledge of the earthwork & underground utilities construction industry.
    8. Knowledge of financial management principles.
    9. Must be self-motivated and punctual to all appointments.
    10. Must be able to manage multiple tasks and have excellent follow up skills.
    11. Must be professional and polished in appearance and speech.

 

Standards – Company Wide

 

  1. Evaluate, recommend, develop and implement improved construction or service systems, policies, methods and procedures.
  2. Evaluate the performance and results of their crews.
  3. Train, lead and coach their crews as needed to improve productivity.
  4. Provide input and assistance to VP of Operations, Project Managers and other Superintendents.
  5. Continually improve personal technical, supervisory, personnel, and customer relations skills.
  6. All interactions with customers, owners, engineers, etc., whether it is in person or a telephone call, will be conducted with respect and in a professional manner.
  7. VP of Operations, Project Managers and other Superintendents will be notified of any issues that cannot be resolved, or deadlines that cannot be met within a reasonable time frame, and before the deadline has arrived.
  8. All proprietary company information will be held as strictly confidential outside the company.
  9. Perform all administrative requirements per process.
  10. General maintenance of company owned assigned tools or equipment.
